ABSTRACT:
The morning of February 1837 walking around the Embely park Wellow, fighting the high tides of her thoughts a young girl hears a voice coming from the silences of the garden, the voice spoke to her about a divine ministry. ministry to serve the sick by relieving them of their physical sufferings and young Florence was convinced that she had a calling to serve the sick and care for them mentioning this event to her elder sister Parthenope she writes “God called me in the morning and asked me would I do good for him alone without reputation”.her calling determined her to undergo a medical training for four months at Kaiserwerth-am-Rhein. with a least knowledge of the evolution she was about to bring destiny drove Florence to Selimiye Barracks in Istanbul. Where she gained a face of recognition for nursing and no one of us is unaware of the service she gave in the Crimean war, where she gained the persona of ‘The Lady with the Lamp’ she had future predictions or vision for this call as a profession. as we observe the entire year 2020 as the international year of nursing at the sudden outbreak of the pandemic covid-19. it gives us a greater opportunity to looking back into the background we can say that nursing wasn’t a discovery of an hour but an evolving and dynamic vocation.

INTRODUCTION:
Personal life
12 may 1820- 13 august 1910 a British social reformer, statistician and a founder of modern nursing. Florence spent her childhood in the lap of luxury. two big houses surrounded by acres of garden, servant at her beck and call. Her father Willam Edward Shore [inherited the estate of his uncle and thus assumed the name nightingale] Her mother Frances and sister Frances Parthenope. Florence strength came from her father who saw the abilities in his daughter.
The way she learnt latin, French, German, Italian and Greek in an early age and her interest in politics, mathematics and statistic, she was highly fashioned in data visualisation with the use of infographics, and effective use of graphical representation her father was of strong belief that the a women must be educated as well she should have a self identity it was Edwards progressive ideas about the women education that served as a back bone for her future. Florence Nightingale as the pioneer of modern nursing had specific envisions for nursing as a profession and she always aspired that nursing must gain a social identity and must be seen as a career option and also that it should gain a world-wide acceptance. as the year 2020 has been declared as the international year for nurses we all. some of her invasions are being fulfilled thus offering nursing an international platform, worldwide recognition. Miss Florence started nursing as a “call from god” and in the course of time nursing has achieved a new identity from the level of social disapproval to the most accepted and opted profession of the era. thus, fulfilling her envisions of seeing the profession flourishing. in one of the statements made by Barbara Dossey international co-director for the Nightingale initiative for global health Canada she states “it will take 100- 150 years for the world to see the kind of nursing she envisioned”. 1860 in the notes for nurses nightingale clearly differentiate nursing from medicine she said “medicine is removing obstruction to natures ability of healing of healing but nursing as creating best conditions eg ventilation, nutrition, cleanliness”. In the need to increase the efficiency of nursing she wanted nurses to have a specific course of learning and procedure which were to be well scripted and documented. this influenced her to write down her guidelines for the coming generation as she had forseen the scope for nursing. hence e we have many letters and notes of her which of them are published and others still remain into private circulation. very few of us know that she was the first one to use the statistic for evaluation of her care given. this in term proved to be a better way evaluate the effectiveness of the care given. living in the the covid -19 period we all have experienced how keeping a record of morality and morbidity rate helps, statistic has helped a lot in maintaining many records in many other situations too. unaware of her efforts she was laying a foundation for research in nursing. taking into consideration the contribution of Florence nightingale in the cremean war.
Relations of Crimean war with the covid 19 pandemic.:
Crimean war 1853 – beginning of the hygiene movement
The alarming situations in the British army camp. Shocking conditions of sever overcrowding, poor food supply, shoddy management. no fewer than 18,000 soldiers had been admitted into military hospitals. ten time more soldiers were dying of diseases such as typhus, typhoid, cholera and dysentery. Florence fought this back with scrubbing every inch of the facility, regular bathing, fresh linen, ventilation and a proper sewage, practicing hand hygiene as frequently as possible. she and the team of 38 nurses brought down the rate of mortality by 2% in a weak. she made sure that hygiene needs of every soldier are looked at personally. she was focused on care than on cure because she personally felt that if care is achieved the rate of cure is achieved parallel to it. she rearranged the physical set up of the soldier camps. keeping distance between the beds of the patients helped to reduce the rate of infection. the provision of ventilation and light made the environment into the tents more living friendly, this facilitated the movement of air into the army camps. healthy and presentable food was one of her dimensions to increase the healing process. she made arrangements for the kitchens so that healthy food could be served to the patients. combination of food that are immunity boosters were one of the major constituents of the food served, along with physical set up she was concerned about the psychological aspects of the patient she spent time with the patient communicating with them. so that they attain a speedy recovery. In one of her notes she quotes “In days to come people will know that the best remedies to constrict the spread of infection is just scrubbing of hands and surfaces as frequently as possible” - Florence Nightingale she was well acquainted with the use of vitamin c and a healthy diet in developing immunity against unknown disease and infection. she specifically had a note of combinations of food stuffs that could induce immunity and combat poor nutritional state .in her notes on nursing she devoted two whole chapters on what the patient should eat and all about immunity enhancers. ‘Thousand of patients starved in the mids of plenty from want of attention to the ways which alone make it possible for them to take food’ – Florence Nightingale. Nightingale introduced new approaches of emotional and psychological sides in patient care, she helped the soldiers who were disabled or nearing death to write letters at their homes.
She desgined special tent settings that contained separate sanitization spaces for the health care workers who came in contact with the infected patients .she quotes in her letters on hospital “every hospital should have a separate washing and scrubbing area for the health workers, so that they do not carry the infection home and also that they minimise the infection between patients” since the condition of the soldier had worsend no body cared to pay attention to their state of mind. Florence Nightingale and her group attended the soldier personally. she took time to speak to the soldier and the soldier eagerly waited to see the lady. she visited the wards in personal, and thus came to be known as the “Lady with the Lamp”. she took special care that they were provided with easy digestible food. she just wanted to explain that a perfect diet and cleanliness habits can reduce the chances of spread of any disease. many times, our lifestyles, diet and grooming practices influence our health. and also, mental health and stability counts on our physical wellbeing.
The covid 19 scene 2020:
Shoshy Goldberg chief nursing officer of isreal states that the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic have given us the opportunity to focus on team work, to showcase the added value of nurses and their central role in patient treatment. Nurses are providing their reliability and that they can take on additional responsibility, no one refuses to work, despite the danger they are putting themselves into more than 12000 applications from student volunteers, who wants to be part of effort. o limit the possibility of infection we are making use of innovation measures, such as the use of technological devices which allow the nurses to monitor a patients conditions remotely. without having entered the patient room, their temperature and vital signs can be measured. we all agree that covid 19 has changed the entire way of living of the people across the world. we have become more conscious regarding cleanliness. people are now practicing hand washing, social distancing and all which Flocence has been quoting in her notes earlier.
since the beginning of the year 2020 we all are going through a very newly adopted lifestyle. till the date since there are no cure or vaccine for this disease, there is a great emphasis on sanitary measured dietry pattern that is being followed by sanitisation of surfaces is thought to be a major defence for the covid 19 virus. without a doubt one can say sanitisation measures used in the Crimean war to treat the patients are proving to be fruitful even today. along with medical crises, corona has created a mental and social stigma amongst the people the sense of being left out and a fear of death is conquering the minds of all. nurses as frontline workers are more responsible for the entire care of the patients. the major similarities one can see in the Crimean war and the covid -19 today was, there is no vaccine discovered yet and the world around is trying to fix the situation by modifying the living environment of the country, we all underwent a long lockdown and are following social distancing with healthy sanitation facilities. comparing all this to miss Florence did to reduce the death rate and rate of morbidity in the army camps we may consider that we are still implementing the same to arrest the rate of spread of infection.
Florence Envision for Nursing:
She strongly believed that a nurse’s operation bases of theories philosophies and the experiences that structure the way they think nursing should be performed. Florence understood nursing as a system. she was strongly determined that nursing should be institutionalise. we can see that nursing has a great career option like Clinical Nurse Educator, Public Health Nursing, Home Health Nursing, Travel Nursing, Hospice Nursing, Telephone Triage Nursing, Nursing Advocate, Nurse Practitoner, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Nurse Midwife, Nurse Anesthetist .and the list goes on. she was a lady of learning throughout her life she believed in learning and keeping records, we have many of her writings and publications she must have definitely envisioned nursing as a researching profession. as Florence said “And if all the money were spent on improving the habitations of those who go to hospitals, and on prisons, we should want neither hospitals nor prisons”. 1886. nursing as a profession has seen many ups and downs in the course of time, and today we can say that what she had envisioned 150 years have been fulfilled. The year 2020 in a real sense is an international year of nurses.
Florence nightingale, her contributions and her envisions have always been a matter of study and discussion for years, many writters and researchers have been writing on her works till date. since the year 2020 has been decleared as the international year of nursing and the with the outbreak of the pendemic covid – 19 nurses all over the world are contributing their best as frontline workers, this must have been definetly be one of the envision of Florence back then. as she wanted nursing to come up as a profession and 2020, we can say is the year that has dawn for the fulfilment of her amibtions. the statement she made has come to a state of accomplishment “it shall take 150 years for the people to the envision I had for nursing”. we need not to stop here, when there is a lot to achieve ahead and we have just made a beginning because in the years to come nursing shall see a good future and scope.
